STABILO bl@ck+ medium – What is a rollerball pen?

STABILO bl@ck+ medium pens use a metal or ceramic ball to deposit water-based ink on paper.

What are the technological differences?

A distinction is made between free-ink and memory systems. In the first case, the ink reservoir contains liquid ink whose flow intensity is regulated by a complex ink control system. In memory systems, an ink-soaked reservoir (which resembles a pad, hence the colloquial name “pad system”) is located in the body of the pen and transfers ink to the paper by a physical effect (the capillary effect) without a guidance system.

What are the differences, what are the similarities?

With both systems, the ink flow can be controlled independently of the user’s writing pressure and can therefore be optimally adapted to the needs of the target group (fast writing or fast drying without smudging) during product development. One of the advantages of the free ink system is that all the ink is distributed evenly right to the end, and no residue remains in the memory. Storage systems, on the other hand, are cheaper to manufacture and cannot leak in the event of pressure variations (e.g. in aircraft).
